Tips for Keeping Produce Fresh Longer

Doctors recommend that everyone eats at least two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables every day. Yet, storing fruits and vegetables can be a problem in many apartments. If you do not get to go grocery shopping often, use these tips to make your produce last longer.

Wrap Celery in Aluminum Foil

Fresh celery is a healthy afterschool snack, and it can be used in a variety of soups, casseroles and one-pot meals. In order to keep your celery fresh longer, cut off most of the green tops. Then, wrap the bottom in aluminum foil.

Store Potatoes Away From Onions

Many people store potatoes in the plastic bag that they come in. If you want them to last more than a week, however, move them to a paper bag with a flat bottom allowing you to leave the bag open at the top. Onions give off ethylene gas causing potatoes to rot faster, so they should never be stored together.

Hang Bananas

If you love to eat bananas, then look for an apartment in Delray Beach, Florida, like those at Blu Atlantic Apartment Homes, that has lots of kitchen space so that you can hang them from a banana tree. If you do not have a banana tree, them in a bowl allowing the ends to hang over the edge of the bowl. Either way, air should be able to circulate around each banana. If you need to store them near other fruit, then carefully wrap the ends with plastic wrap held in place with a tight rubber band to prevent ethylene gas from escaping from the bananas.

Store Leafy Greens in Plastic Tubs

You should wash your leafy greens before storing them. Then, remove excess water with paper towels. Place a paper towel in the bottom of a plastic tub. Add your greens before placing another paper towel on top. Place them near the front of your refrigerator because the back may be too cold. In order to keep your greens fresh, never store anything else in these plastic tubs.

Keep Asparagus in a Glass Measuring Cup

Asparagus can be kept up to one week if you wash it, and then place the ends in water. A great way to do this is to put the asparagus in a two-cup glass measuring cup. Then, stick the cup inside a large plastic bag and put it in the refrigerator.
